Talk General FAQ's
- How does Irish Broadband Talk work?
Our Talk service works using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP). The signals from your telephone are converted into digital information that is transmitted over your Breeze connection to the Internet, and onwards to the destination you are calling. You don’t need to have your computer switched on to use the Talk service, just pick up the phone and make a call.
- What is VoIP?
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a technology that allows you to make telephone calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analogue) phone line.
Using the equipment you selected (an ATA with a normal handset or our special VoIP phone), the analogue signals from your telephone are converted to digital information and your call is sent over your Breeze connection to the Internet and onwards to the destination you are calling.
Because most of your telephone call is carried on the Internet, we can offer you fantastic savings on fixed-line call rates.
- How do I pay for Irish Broadband Talk?
There is a once off payment for the purchase of the ATA. This will be included in your next Irish Broadband bill following service set-up. Your chosen call package will be charged on a monthly basis and will be included in your monthly Irish Broadband bill. Calls outside your call package will be charged against your Pay-As-You-Go balance. You can top up your Pay-As-You-Go balance any time using your on-line account at talk.irishbroadband.ie. These additional calls will be charged at our published rates: Rates
- Will I be able to call the Emergency Services?
All calls on Talk are dependent on your broadband connection. Emergency calls to 112 and 999 will be directed to the emergency services, however, no guarantee can be made about the reliability of these calls. As a backup service, it is recommended that you always have another form of communication to hand in case you need to make an emergency call e.g. a mobile phone with adequate battery and signal. Customers should especially be aware that power outages are likely to render computer equipment and Internet connectivity non-functional and therefore it is not recommended to rely on your Talk service for emergency calls.
Due to the nature of VoIP and our Talk service it is not possible to accurately determine the exact location of the caller. Callers using the Talk service for emergency calls will need to inform the operator of their physical location.
Irish Broadband accepts no responsibility for you being unable to make or receive emergency calls while your Talk service is unavailable.
- What does ‘Unlimited’ call package mean?
This means you can use your Talk Home call package to call landlines in the UK and Ireland at any time of the day for normal residential use on an unlimited basis subject to the Fair Use Policy.
- What is the Fair Use Policy?
Irish Broadband applies a Fair Use Policy to the use of the Talk Home service.
This Policy is based on the service:
- being used for normal residential use, for private use and not for purposes of trade, business or profession and
- customers not exceeding 2,000 minutes of calls per month in their call package
Normal residential landline use is, on average, approximately 350 minutes per month, therefore the Fair Use Policy allows for use over and above average normal residential use
- What do I need to get Irish Broadband Talk?
All you need is a Breeze broadband connection from Irish Broadband, some Talk equipment (choose from an ATA and a normal telephone handset or a VoIP phone e.g. our Siemens Cordless Phone). When you sign-up we’ll set up your Talk account and send you the equipment you selected. Then you simply need to plug your phone into your broadband connection. If you choose the Siemens Cordless Phone you will not need another phone handset to use the service.
- What is an 076 number?
An 076 number is a new phone number prefix that has been allocated for VoIP by the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg). It is a non geographic number so you can be called from anywhere in Ireland for the price of a local call. All Talk customers will receive an 076 number when they sign up.
- How do I top-up my Pay-As-You-Go credit?
You can log-in to your Talk on-line account from talk.irishbroadband.ie using the username and password provided to you when you sign-up. From your on-line account you can click the ‘Top-up’ button and you’ll be taken through the top-up process.
- What happens when I run out of Pay-As-You-Go credit?
You won’t be able to make calls outside of your chosen call package. We’ll send you a reminder e-mail when your credit drops below €1 so you never have to run out!
- How do I access my voicemail?
Just dial 171 from your phone and enter your voicemail PIN number. You can also get your voicemail from any other telephone by dialling (01) 4361720 and following the instructions.
- What is an ATA?
An ATA or Analogue Terminal Adapter is a piece of hardware you need to convert the analogue signals from your normal telephone/handset into digital information for transmission over your broadband connection. The Siemens Cordless Phone that Irish Broadband offers combines the benefits of an ATA and a digital cordless phone in one device.
- How can I make a VoIP call?
You simply pick up your phone and dial the number in the same way you would with a normal land line. You can ring anyone, anytime, anywhere.
- Can people call me?
With your Talk service you will receive your very own number so people can call you, even if they don’t have an Internet connection. Friends and family simply dial your number from their fixed or mobile phone, it’s that simple.
